Teacher Spotlight March 2020

This month’s teacher spotlight is Stephanie Pritchett! Stephanie teaches at South Jordan Middle School in the Jordan School District and has been teaching for six years. She began her teaching career as a substitute teacher. During her time as a substitute, she was asked to be a long term substitute in a resource classroom, “I loved helping these students understand math using different strategies, manipulatives and real life examples. I was intrigued with the new core curriculum my children didn't grow up with. It was then I decided I wanted to become a teacher” -Stephanie.

Her nominator raved “Stephanie is an enormously dedicated and motivated math

educator for students with disabilities. She maintains high standards and expectations for all of her students. She is focused on using the math practices to teach the math at deep levels. She is always trying to learn new strategies and implement them in her classes immediately. Her students achieve commensurate with their non-disabled peers. She thinks of herself as a math teacher AND a special educator”.

Stephanie loves showing her students that she cares about them and doing everything she can to help them. While teaching can be challenging, she thrives on finding new and engaging ways to teach math. “Teaching is worth it for me when students have that light bulb of understanding, a smile come across there face that says "I get it!" and when they express appreciation in the littlest of ways” -Stephanie.

When she is not teaching, Stephanie can be found taking a walk with her husband, connecting with her children, reading, learning, doing yoga, or gardening.

We so appreciate Stephanie’s dedication to her students, mathematics, and special education, and on behalf of the Utah State Board of Education, we say THANK YOU.
